Someone said to me yesterday that I should stop fussing about alcohol because kids have always indulged…. but then I found this startling quote:
According to statistics compiled by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health from 1997 to 2007, the number of Ontarians between the ages of 18 and 29 that took part in “heavy drinking” rose from 11% in 1995 to 26% in 2007, while “hazardous or harmful drinking” jumped from 22% in 2002 to 39% in 2007. full article
When working in crime prevention, we always need to be aware of the diffrences between people’s perception of safety and actual crime rates. We need to avoid alarmist statements and focus on what really works to prevent crime. Unfortunately, it appears that concerns about binge drinking, and the associated crime and injury, are NOT alarmist. The increases are real and they are significant.
